Arsenal: The Prime Minister Reaffirms the Central Role of Education for Socio-Economic Progress
On May 6, Prime Minister Navin Ramgoolam emphasized the importance of education as a cornerstone of economic and social development during the ceremony commemorating the 104th anniversary of Arsenal Government School. A commemorative plaque was unveiled in the presence of the Minister of Education and Human Resources, Mahend Gungapersad, the Minister of Local Government, Ranjiv Woochit, MP Kaviraj Rookny, and the school's principal, Sarda Naga. A magazine outlining the school's achievements was also launched during the event.
The Prime Minister also took part in a tree planting ceremony. In his speech, he recalled the impact of introducing free education in 1977 under the leadership of Sir Seewoosagur Ramgoolam, reaffirming the government's commitment to investing in human capital and promoting inclusivity, particularly for women and people with disabilities. He also announced the reintroduction of the NICE project in schools to strengthen values and discipline.
For his part, the Minister of Education praised the increase in the school's exam success rate, which rose from 44% to 77%. He reiterated the government's determination to combat violence and issues in schools while highlighting the opportunities provided to 2,500 learners through the Foundation Programme.
