Osman Mahomed Highlights Road Safety Progress in Mauritius

The World Road Safety Week 2026 is being celebrated in Mauritius from May 8 to 13, as part of a United Nations initiative coordinated by the World Health Organization, focusing on protecting the most vulnerable road users. On May 8, Transport Minister Osman Mahomed announced on his Facebook page that "Mauritius is celebrating World Road Safety Week 2026 in alignment with the United Nations." He also reminded that the theme remains unchanged: "Safe walking and cycling for sustainable and healthy cities."

According to this post, the minister highlighted the progress made in road safety, with a gradual decrease in road fatalities, dropping from 138 in 2023 to 134 in 2024, and then to 124 in 2025. However, he noted that "every lost life remains a tragedy."

Osman Mahomed also emphasized the impact of the points-based driving license system, reintroduced on January 31, which he described as a tool beginning to show encouraging results. According to the data mentioned in his post, a decrease of about 25% in road fatalities was recorded in April 2026.

As part of this global week, several actions are planned across the island, including police control operations, awareness campaigns in Mahébourg, Bambous, and Flacq, as well as interactive broadcasts on local radio stations. Osman Mahomed stated that a consultative workshop organized with the University of Mauritius, scheduled for May 11, 2026, will bring together key stakeholders to develop the national road safety strategy for 2026-2030. He reaffirmed the national goal of reducing road deaths and serious injuries by 50% by 2030, in line with the commitments made by the United Nations.
