Road Safety: Control Operations and Awareness Campaigns
In observance of the United Nations Global Road Safety Week from May 8 to 13, the Ministry of Transport is launching activities and operations nationwide under the theme "Safe Walking and Cycling for Sustainable Healthy Cities."
The Cabinet has acknowledged this program, which primarily aims to raise public awareness about the dangers faced by pedestrians and cyclists while strengthening protective measures for these vulnerable road users.
The ministry will implement a strategy focused on enhancing road safety, conducting control operations, improving infrastructure, and raising public awareness. The police and the Traffic Management and Road Safety Unit will conduct joint control operations to ensure better compliance with the road code.
Awareness teams will also be deployed in Bambous, Mahébourg, and Flacq to engage with the public. Reflective vests and stickers for helmets will be distributed to cyclists and motorcyclists to enhance their visibility on the roads.
A one-day consultative workshop will be held tomorrow, May 11, in collaboration with the University of Mauritius. Academics and stakeholders will discuss the key challenges related to road safety and recommendations that will inform the development of the future National Road Safety Strategy 2026-2030.
Several activities are also planned in primary schools in Mauritius and Rodrigues on May 12 as part of the Holistic Education Programme. Educational sessions and the distribution of brochures on road safety will be organized for students. In Rodrigues, the Mobile Traffic Playground will be set up at Oyster Bay Government School to provide children with a practical and interactive experience regarding road safety.
