Road Safety: A New Strengthened Educational Program for Students
The Minister of Land Transport, Osman Mahomed, urged children to become ambassadors of change during an awareness campaign held on Tuesday, May 12, 2026, at De La Salle RCA School in Port Louis, as part of the 2026 International Road Safety Week.
The event brought together Akash Sungker, Director of the Traffic Management and Road Safety Unit (TRMSU); representatives from the National Land Transport Authority (NLTA); educators; and students, all united around the message of safer roads for future generations.
A road safety brochure designed for young learners was launched at this occasion and will soon be distributed to all nursery and primary schools across the country. This initiative is part of the activities marking the United Nations Global Road Safety Week, observed from May 8 to 12, under the theme "Make Walking and Cycling Safe."
In a statement, Osman Mahomed described De La Salle RCA School as one of the oldest schools in Port Louis, adding that he was honored to speak to the children about such an important topic. He encouraged them to become ambassadors of change and to promote responsible behavior on the roads within their families and communities.
The minister also highlighted the implementation of the National Curriculum Framework for the Continuum of Road Safety Education, developed by the Mauritius Institute of Education (MIE) in collaboration with TRMSU and the Ministry of Education and Human Resources. The program integrates road safety education into Grades 1 to 6 and aims to equip children with the knowledge and reflexes necessary to protect themselves and others on the road.
Furthermore, he indicated that efforts are underway to extend the framework to pre-primary and secondary institutions, with the aim of reaching a wider audience and training a new generation of responsible and safety-conscious road users in Mauritius.
