In a tragic incident in Triolet, sisters Koomunty Mathurasingh, 79, and Gyantee Humawtee Ramnarain, 83, were violently attacked in their family home on the night of Saturday, June 21, while they were sleeping. An intruder broke into their home, bound and gagged them, and assaulted them.

Koomunty Mathurasingh did not survive. Her body was found under a mattress, with her wrists bound with tape and raffia, and her mouth obstructed by clothing. Her sister sustained injuries and was taken to the Northern Hospital, where she remains hospitalized.

"He tied my hands. Then, he took a cord, tied my arms and head, and covered my eyes," Gyantee Ramnarain testified. The assault occurred behind a shop run by the victims’ nephew. An employee of the store is believed to be the last person to have seen them alive. Alerted, their niece Artee visited the scene: "I went, the door was open, I found one of my aunts under the mattress, the other was covered beneath it," she recounted.

Approximately Rs 3,000 was found at the scene.

On the same day, the Northern Divisional Crime Intelligence Unit arrested 36-year-old Ravish Kumar Seetul. He was identified through surveillance camera footage and confessed to the crime. Rs 1,000 was found in his possession. He will be presented in court at Pamplemousses on Monday, June 23, where he faces provisional charges of murder.
