Electoral Reform: Here’s What Bérenger Proposes

Electoral reform is one of the commitments made between Navin Ramgoolam and Paul Bérenger to persuade Bérenger to stay in the government last week during the peak of the crisis within the Alliance of Change.

In a press conference on Saturday, Paul Bérenger emphasized that a commitment has been made to swiftly advance this reform. He stated that there are no major disagreements between him and Navin Ramgoolam on this matter, except for a slight difference regarding the Best Loser System.

The Deputy Prime Minister advocates for a reform that includes:

• The introduction of a significant proportion of proportional representation, with 20 deputies elected proportionally;

• The abolition of the requirement for candidates to declare their ethnic background during legislative elections.
