Mauritius Casinos: COO Appointment Frozen

The operations at the Mauritius Casinos have been put on hold. The appointment of Jackie Li San Cheung as Chief Operating Officer (COO), which was initially scheduled for this Tuesday, has been "put on hold." The announcement regarding the freeze on her appointment was communicated to employees on Friday, November 21, the day after an official note confirming her arrival was issued.

This sudden reversal comes as the organization, a subsidiary of the State Investment Corporation, has been engulfed in a financial crisis for over a decade. Last month, during a parliamentary response, the Prime Minister revealed that the Mauritius Casinos have accumulated losses exceeding Rs 1.5 billion between 2015 and 2024, highlighting the rarity of such a situation in the gaming industry.

In light of the magnitude of the difficulties, a recovery plan is being developed, which includes internal reorganization, early retirement, and potential asset sales. The appointment of Jackie Li San Cheung, who has over 45 years of experience in the sector and previously served as Officer-in-Charge, was seen as a strategic lever to drive this transformation. However, the unexpected suspension of her commencement raises significant concerns internally. Some employees perceive this as a worrying signal, as they believe the company must "quickly reshuffle the cards to secure its future."
