Only 5% of Dogs Registered

Only 5% of the dogs in the country are currently registered. This alarming statistic was brought to light during a heated discussion in Parliament, where MP Adrien Duval questioned Agriculture Minister Arvin Boolell about the rising number of stray dogs, delays at shelters, and the poor start of the registration campaign. According to the Mauritius Society for Animal Welfare, there have been efforts to expedite registrations, with 14,500 dogs registered in just two months—more than double the total for all of 2024. However, it is estimated that between 250,000 and 300,000 dogs remain unregistered. With the 2013 study now outdated, the ministry is planning a national survey using drones to map the canine population, identify packs, and inform new policies. Adrien Duval criticized the initial registration campaign as "anxiety-inducing," citing emergency fee reductions (from Rs 500 to 350), a single registration center at the outset, and panic among dog owners. Arvin Boolell responded, stating, "We are making progress despite limited resources."

The discussion escalated into accusations of unilateralism and insults, leading to a suspension of the session at 2:56 PM.
