Eddy Boissézon Passes Away

Eddy Boissézon, the former Vice President of the Republic, passed away on Saturday, November 1, at the age of 73. He was a prominent figure in the Muvman Liberater (ML) party and the Mauritian Parliament, having previously served as Minister of Public Service.

Another notable figure in Mauritian politics has left us: Marie Cyril Eddy Boissézon, former Vice President of the Republic, who died at the age of 73. Born on March 28, 1952, he dedicated a significant part of his life to public service and politics. A former member of the Mauritian Militant Movement (MMM), he joined the Muvman Liberater in 2014, where he served as the Secretary General under Ivan Collendavelloo.

Eddy Boissézon served in the National Assembly from 1995 to 2000, and again from 2014 to 2019. In January 2017, he was appointed Minister of Public Service and Administrative Reforms, a role he held until November 2019. That same year, after an unsuccessful candidacy in the No. 17 (Curepipe/Midlands) constituency during the general elections on November 7, he was nominated by Prime Minister Pravind Jugnauth for the position of Vice President.

His election by the National Assembly took place on December 2, 2019, coinciding with his inauguration. He was also honored as a Grand Officer of the Order of the Star and Key of the Indian Ocean. Before his political career, Eddy Boissézon worked in the private sector. An alumnus of St. Joseph College in Curepipe, he worked at Barclays Bank and later as the Human Resources Manager at Scott & Co. Ltd, before becoming the General Manager of ATICS & Co. Ltd.

Despite sustaining an ankle injury, he continued to be active in his duties. While serving as Minister of Public Service, he fractured his ankle during a football match, an experience he humorously described as a reminder of human vulnerability, stating, "One can be a minister but still be vulnerable."

Eddy Boissézon was a father of three. Just days before his passing, the Boissézon family was already mourning the loss of his sister-in-law, the wife of his brother, Bernard Boissézon. The former Vice President's passing adds to the family's grief, as they now face a double tragedy.

Défi Media extends its heartfelt condolences to his wife Connie, his three children, and all those affected by this loss.

In 2018, while serving as Minister of Public Service, Eddy Boissézon surprised many during a banquet held in honor of Saudi Prince Abdulaziz Bin Saud Bin Nayef Bin Abdulaziz Al Saud, who was visiting Mauritius. He attended the event in a wheelchair due to a fractured ankle.

The injury occurred during a football match on June 16, 2018. He was part of a small team he regularly played with, but a sudden movement in the heat of the game led him to the hospital, where doctors confirmed a fracture of his right ankle. Eddy explained that typically, such a fracture would require a month to heal, but due to his age, recovery could take longer.

The then-Minister of Public Service did not want to disrupt his schedule and continued to report to his office daily, using crutches or a wheelchair depending on the location.

President Dharam Gokhool praised Eddy Boissézon as a kind-hearted and dedicated individual, stating, "Eddy was a dear friend and a person of great heart. We often had rich and constructive discussions on various issues, including national matters." He expressed his condolences to Boissézon's family and all who were honored to know him.

Ken Fong, former mayor of Beau-Bassin/Rose-Hill, expressed his deep sorrow over the loss of his "big brother" Eddy Boissézon and recalled how he played a pivotal role in introducing him to the Muvman Liberater. Fong noted Boissézon's contributions as a great Secretary General of the ML and his pride in serving as Vice President. He acknowledged being aware of Boissézon's declining health and expressed shock at the news of his passing.
