Night Market in Port-Louis: Three Additional Streets Awaiting Approval from the Cabinet

The Night Market in Port-Louis will officially launch this Friday, marking the start of a series of nighttime activities that will continue until January. The event promises to attract a large audience eager to enjoy local stalls, flavors, and a festive atmosphere in the heart of the capital.

However, ahead of this highly anticipated opening, the issue of the location for seasonal vendors has caused some tensions. Several vendors, who did not secure spots on Desforges Street, had a meeting on Thursday with Lord Mayor Aslam Hossenally.

According to Salim Muthy, the spokesperson for the vendors, the municipality has committed to expanding the Night Market area. "Thus, three additional streets will be developed. These new spaces will accommodate the seasonal vendors who have no designated spots," he stated after the meeting.

Confirming this initiative, Aslam Hossenally mentioned that he has already initiated the necessary procedures to obtain permission to use Bourbon Street, Joseph-Rivière Street, and a portion of Jummah Mosque Street. He emphasized that the Road Development Authority (RDA) has already given its approval. The municipality is now awaiting the green light from the Cabinet to finalize this extension.

As the final administrative adjustments are underway, the opening of the Night Market is anticipated to be promising. The initiative to expand the reception areas could not only alleviate the frustrations of the vendors but also provide the public with a richer and more diverse experience. Port-Louis is thus preparing to enjoy several weeks of commercial and cultural vibrancy.
