Death of inmate Andy Selmour at Melrose Prison: Two suspected sticks used by attackers sealed

The death of inmate Andy Selmour at Melrose Prison: Two wooden sticks suspected of being used by the assailants have been sealed.

The investigation into the fatal assault on Andy Selmour, which occurred on Tuesday, December 9, at the Eastern High Security Prison (EHSP) in Melrose, is ongoing. Two 80-centimeter wooden sticks found in the Kestrel Yard have been sealed. They are suspected of being used as weapons during the attack and were recovered by forensic police during joint operations with the Criminal Investigation Division (CID) of the Eastern Division, the Divisional Crime Intelligence Unit, and the guards of the EHSP.

The autopsy of the 33-year-old inmate has not yet been carried out, pending the arrival of his mother, who is currently in England. Preliminary findings indicate that Andy Selmour may have been struck with several blunt objects, including a piece of iron torn from a bed and a wooden rod, causing severe head injuries. Police suspect a link to a drug-related vendetta within the prison.

On Tuesday evening, investigators searched the Kestrel Yard and discovered the two black sticks, hidden in different locations: one in a cache and the other near a trash can. They have been sealed and will be analyzed for any biological traces or impacts consistent with the assault on inmate Selmour.

On Thursday, nine guards and four inmates were questioned by the CID of Montagne-Blanche to clarify the events. Two members of the infirmary staff were also interviewed to clarify the admission conditions of Andy Selmour and the exact time of his arrival. Their actions, recorded in official logs, will be thoroughly examined.

Surveillance camera footage has proven crucial. It shows an inmate striking Andy Selmour multiple times in the head with a blunt object, reinforcing the theory of a targeted attack.

During the police intervention on Tuesday evening, the guards led investigators to infirmary cell number 3. The body of the inmate, partially undressed, lay on a bed. The doctor from the Emergency Medical Service (Samu) confirmed the death and noted several lacerations and bleeding. The body was then transferred to the morgue at Victoria Hospital in Candos for an autopsy, which will be conducted in the coming days. The investigation continues to establish accountability in this matter.
