Death of Andy Selmour at Melrose Prison: An Inquiry Board Will Be Established
An Inquiry Board will be established to investigate the death of inmate Andy Selmour. The announcement was made by Prime Minister Navin Ramgoolam this afternoon at the National Assembly.
This Inquiry Board will be chaired by former judge Paul Lam Shang Leen. A police investigation is also underway, the head of the government specified.
It should be noted that Andy Selmour died on Tuesday evening following a violent altercation with other inmates at Melrose Prison.
An autopsy conducted this afternoon by Chief Police Medical Officer Sudesh Kumar Gungadin concluded that Andy Selmour died from a skull fracture. Multiple injuries, particularly on the inmate's arms, were also revealed during the autopsy.
Two senior prison officials have been suspended since the incident. Four inmates have also been interviewed by the Criminal Investigation Division (CID).
