Santa Claus: "Mauritians Have an Incredible Gift for Sharing"

Exclusive Interview

What if Santa Claus traded snow for sunshine? Before the most magical night of the year, the world’s most beloved character chose Mauritius for an unexpected stop. Tropical flavors, a sweet way of life, and secrets from a myth that continues to inspire dreams even under the tropics.

Santa Claus, what brings you to Mauritius?
Ah… Mauritius! As soon as my reindeer flew over the island, I sensed something special. A warmth of humanity, a peaceful energy. After a year of listening to the wishes of children around the world, I needed calm, sunshine, and genuine smiles. Mauritius is like a big hug before the effort.

And how do you spend your time on the island?
I take my time. I walk barefoot, listen to the sea, and taste everything I can! Mauritians have an incredible gift for sharing. Here, no one rushes me. They tell me, "Santa, take a break, eat, breathe." And I obey! (laughs)

Let’s talk food… What Mauritian dishes do you prefer?
Oh wow… Mauritian curry, without a doubt! Vegetable curry, chicken curry, fish curry… The spices are just right, never overwhelming. And then there’s the lamb prepared with love, the homemade sauces… it’s a feast!

And what about desserts and tropical fruits?
A true paradise! Mangoes, lychees… I admit I eat more than I should. At the North Pole, we don’t have such treasures. Here, every bite is a surprise.

Do you have a “favorite gift” to give to children?
My favorite gift? The one that lights up their eyes. It’s not always the most expensive. Sometimes, it’s a little wooden mouse, a fabric lamb, a simple toy made with love. Toys that tell a story have a special magic.

How do you make traditional toys?
Ah, it’s quite an art! In my workshop, every toy starts with an idea, a drawing, a child’s dream. The elves use wood, fabric, lightweight metal. Nothing is mass-produced, without soul. A traditional toy must be able to stand the test of time.

Do you still receive special orders?
Of course! Some children write to me for unique toys: a doll that resembles their grandmother, a little train like the one from their village, or an imaginary animal. Those requests touch me deeply.

What are the major toy trends this year?
I see three major trends: educational toys, to learn while having fun; creative games, drawing, building, music; and a big novelty: gifts related to animals.

Do many children ask for pets?
Yes… dogs, cats, rabbits, sometimes even turtles! But I always explain: a pet is not a toy. So, often, I bring pet accessories, books, or games to learn how to care for them.

Have you faced difficulties during your tours?
Oh yes! More and more houses no longer have chimneys… it’s a real challenge! But magic always finds a way. An open window, a balcony, sometimes just a simple thought is enough.

What do Santa’s reindeer do?
They are extraordinary. Even when it’s tough, they never abandon me. In Mauritius, they rest too… but they prefer the shade! (laughs)

What does Santa Claus do when he’s not working?
I read a lot. I love tales, stories from around the world, ancient legends. I also listen to soft music. And I eat… chocolate!

Do you still love chocolate?
More than ever! And when a child leaves a cookie, a glass of milk, or a little chocolate, I’m deeply touched. It’s not just about eating; it’s about the gesture.

What about Mrs. Claus? How does she cope with this period?
Ah, Mrs. Claus… She loves cooking delicious meals. She reminds me to eat healthy, to rest. She is my rock. Without her, I wouldn’t be the Santa Claus you know.

Do you have any tour anecdotes to share?
Thousands! Once, a child left a letter to thank me, without asking for a gift. Another time, a cat fell asleep in my toy bag. It’s these moments that give me the strength to keep going.

What do you think of today’s world?
It moves fast. Too fast, sometimes. But I still believe in kindness. Children teach me every year that love, sharing, and solidarity still exist.

What’s your message to the children of Mauritius?
Dream. Love. Respect your parents, your friends, nature. The magic of Christmas is not in the gifts; it is in the heart.

And to the adults?
Don’t forget the child within you. Offering a smile, a listening ear, a bit of time… is also a gift.

Do you still believe in the magic of Christmas?
Always! As long as a child believes, magic exists. And even when we grow up, we can choose to believe again.

A final word before your big tour?
Yes. Peace, love, and hope. May Christmas be a time of gathering, sweetness, and may each home feel a bit of that magic… even after my visit.
