Drowning of Baby Ahaan, 8 Months: Babysitter Released on Bail
The babysitter of baby Ahaan Dasootee, who was arrested on Saturday for negligence and involuntary manslaughter, has been released on bail following her appearance in the Weekend Court on Sunday. She is required to pay a bail of Rs 15,000 and sign a debt acknowledgment of Rs 50,000 on Monday at the Rivière-du-Rempart court. Additionally, she must report every Tuesday between 6 AM and 6 PM to the nearest police station to her home. The police did not object to her conditional release.
At 39 years old and residing in Petit-Raffray, she was arrested by the Goodlands police following the tragic incident that occurred early in the afternoon, during which Ahaan Dasootee, who was under her care, died after being found in an inflatable pool. The incident took place at the babysitter's home, where the infant's older sister, also very young, was present.
According to preliminary investigation findings, the babysitter immediately took the child to the Mediclinic in Goodlands, where his death was confirmed. The infant's body was subsequently transferred to the morgue of Dr. A. G. Jeetoo Hospital. An autopsy conducted on Saturday evening by Dr. Prem Chamane revealed that the cause of death was cerebral edema and pulmonary edema.
Officers from the Scene of Crime Office (SOCO) and the Criminal Investigation Division (CID) of the Northern Division arrived at the scene to carry out the necessary investigations and collect evidence. The babysitter was interviewed by the Goodlands police investigators, who confirmed that baby Ahaan and his sister were under her supervision at the time of the tragedy.
The infant's parents, Suraj and Samantha Dasootee, were also questioned by the police. The couple from Petit-Raffray described the incident as an accident, believing the babysitter acted without malicious intent.
The couple never imagined such a tragedy could occur. They stated that they had entrusted their children to the babysitter for five months, saying, "There has never been a problem. She has always looked after them well."
