The Health Minister Advocates for Inclusive Cancer Care on World Cancer Day
On February 3, 2026, at the Paul Octave Wiehe Auditorium in Réduit, the Minister of Health and Wellness, Anil Bachoo, emphasized the significance of cancer prevention, early detection, and patient-centered care during the launch of activities marking World Cancer Day 2026.
Referring to the global theme "United by a Unique Cause," the Health Minister reminded that while cancer poses a common challenge, each patient's experience is unique and requires compassionate and inclusive healthcare responses. He noted that cancer remains a major public health concern worldwide, with approximately 20 million new cases and nearly 10 million deaths reported each year.
Nationally, Anil Bachoo indicated that the incidence of cancer continues to rise, with 3,362 new cases recorded in 2024, representing an 18% increase from 2023. He added that cancer accounted for 13% of total deaths during the same period, with lung and breast cancer being the most frequently diagnosed among men and women, respectively.
According to the Minister, between 30% and 50% of cancers are preventable, and early detection significantly improves survival rates. He highlighted the government's ongoing investment in awareness campaigns, non-communicable disease screening, breast and cervical cancer screening programs, and HPV vaccination for girls and boys. Regarding treatment, he pointed out the expansion of cancer care services, including the availability of positron emission tomography services at the new cancer center, the establishment of breast units nationwide, and the upcoming introduction of brachytherapy for the treatment of gynecological cancers.
