[Petroleum Supply] Michaël Sik Yuen: "We have a Plan A, Plan B, Plan C, and Plan D"
On Tuesday's parliamentary debates at the National Assembly, palpable tension arose between opposition leader Joe Lesjongard and the Minister of Commerce and Consumer Protection, Michaël Sik Yuen, regarding Mauritius' energy resilience in the face of Middle Eastern instability. The Private Notice Question focused on the management of petroleum product stocks, which are theoretically secured until May, despite a global context marked by significant maritime disruptions.
In response to concerns about these maritime disturbances, Michaël Sik Yuen assured that his ministry has several levels of contingency plans. "We have a Plan A, a Plan B, a Plan C, and a Plan D," he stated. This response elicited a strong reaction from the opposition leader, who demanded further details. The Minister of Commerce replied that Plan B involves launching a new tender for petroleum supply within 48 hours. The current supplier has activated its own backup mechanisms, securing a shipment from Singapore, which is officially scheduled to arrive on April 2nd, he specified.
