Middle East Conflict: Government Strengthens Measures to Protect Consumers

In response to the repercussions of the conflict in the Middle East, the government has reaffirmed its commitment to mitigate the external pressures on the Mauritian economy and consumer purchasing power.

Answering a Private Notice Question in the National Assembly, the Minister of Commerce and Consumer Protection, Michaël Sik Yuen, emphasized that Mauritius, as an open economy heavily reliant on imports, remains particularly vulnerable to global fluctuations.

He noted that rising prices of oil, food products, and logistical costs, along with pressure on foreign currencies, could directly impact production costs and consumer prices. Inflation for 2026 could thus reach around 6%, compared to initial forecasts of 3.6% to 4%.

To address these challenges, a high-level committee chaired by the Financial Secretary has been established to monitor the situation and propose suitable measures. A subcommittee has also been set up to assess the impact on SMEs and vulnerable groups.

The minister also reminded that the Price Stabilisation Fund plays a crucial role in supporting several essential products, alongside the fuel price stabilization mechanism aimed at cushioning international market fluctuations. According to the authorities, these measures aim to contain the effects of external shocks and maintain the country’s economic stability.
