Protection Order: Raise Brave Girls Highlights Ongoing Shortcomings in Women's Protection

In Mauritius, the effectiveness of Protection Orders has come back into the spotlight following new cases of femicide. The organization Raise Brave Girls has once again sounded the alarm, calling for an urgent strengthening of protective measures.

During a Private Notice Question (PNQ) at the National Assembly this Tuesday, the Minister of Gender Equality revealed that 7 out of the 10 women killed since January 2025 were holders of a Protection Order. This alarming statistic highlights the limitations of the current system intended to protect victims of domestic violence. Arianne Navarre Marie also announced that the Domestic Abuse Bill will be presented to Parliament within a month.

In light of this situation, Raise Brave Girls advocates for a stricter enforcement of the law and the introduction of femicide into Mauritian legislation. The organization believes that existing measures remain inadequate to ensure the safety of at-risk women.

Among its recommendations, Brave Girls proposes that the lifting of a Protection Order should only occur after a Social Inquiry Report is conducted by the relevant authorities. The goal is to thoroughly assess the risks faced by the victim before any decision is made.

The organization also emphasizes the need to introduce electronic monitoring bracelets for individuals under a Protection Order, in order to ensure better tracking and enhance victim protection.

Finally, Brave Girls calls for improvements to the L’Espwar app, which is currently deemed too limited, to make it more accessible and effective for those in danger.

In a context where the statistics remain alarming, the organization believes it is imperative to move from an existing legal framework to a protection system that is truly operational on the ground.
