PNQ – Chagos: No timeline for the implementation of the agreement with the UK due to lack of British ratification, says Ramgoolam

During a parliamentary session on Tuesday, April 21, Prime Minister Navin Ramgoolam stated that there is currently no timeline for the implementation of the agreement with the United Kingdom due to the absence of ratification from the UK government. This response came in reply to a Private Notice Question (PNQ) raised by opposition leader Joe Lesjongard, who inquired about the progress on the Chagos issue. Ramgoolam highlighted that a delegation from the UK’s Foreign, Commonwealth and Development Office is expected to arrive in Port-Louis to continue discussions tomorrow. Financially, the Prime Minister noted that over £408,000, equivalent to nearly Rs 24 million, has been spent so far on Withers LLP, a London-based law firm hired by the Mauritian government.
