Leptospirosis: A Fourth Death Recorded in Mauritius

On Tuesday, April 21, a death related to leptospirosis was reported. The patient was admitted to Dr. A.G. Jeetoo Hospital in Port Louis.

This new case brings the total number of deaths attributed to this disease to four.

In a statement to RadioPlus on Wednesday, April 22, Dr. Ashwamed Dinassing, Acting Director of Health Services at the Ministry of Health, indicated that the patient had comorbidities.

The country currently has 15 active cases of leptospirosis. This disease is transmitted through the urine of infected rats, particularly during contact in rainy conditions, such as in fields.

In case of fever, joint pain, sore throat, or fatigue, individuals are advised to visit a health center without delay. Patients are encouraged to report any potential contact with rats and to specify their professional activities to facilitate diagnosis and treatment.
