Drugs in Schools: Mahend Gungapersad Questioned About the Minors Brigade and Possession of Offensive Weapons

During the National Assembly session on Tuesday, April 28, Education Minister Mahend Gungapersad was questioned about the potential revival of the Minors Brigade, which was previously active in combating illicit substance use in schools. In response, he stated that the proposal would be examined by a committee chaired by the Attorney General, focused on the issue of 'children in conflict with the law', to determine the next steps.

Another question addressed the possible connection between the use of synthetic drugs in certain colleges and the recent discussions around the possession of offensive weapons. Mahend Gungapersad noted that no evidence-based data is available at this time. However, he assured that investigations will be conducted to gather reliable information, enabling informed decisions to be made in the future.
