Murder of Nawsheen Chady: Arianne Navarre-Marie Responds

"No one can remain indifferent to what Nawsheen Chady has endured." This was the statement from Arianne Navarre-Marie, the Minister of Gender Equality, following the murder of the 37-year-old woman in Saint-Pierre on Thursday, July 10.
The minister noted that this case had not been reported to her ministry. Since 2020, she emphasized that 24 women have lost their lives under tragic circumstances. In 2024 alone, there have already been 5,758 recorded cases of domestic violence.
On Friday, Arianne Navarre-Marie expressed her "sadness" and assured that her ministry is taking action. The family of Nawsheen Chady is currently receiving psychological support.
A new law on domestic violence is being prepared, and awareness campaigns continue across the island.
The minister is urging victims and witnesses of domestic violence to report these acts via the hotline 139.
Nawsheen Chady was beaten to death by her husband, Safwan Chady, on Thursday afternoon in their family yard in Saint-Pierre.
Just hours earlier, her mother, Roziffa Eckburally, had alerted the police by filing for a precautionary measure due to repeated threats and violence — but to no avail.
Safwan Chady was arrested and initially denied the charges before confessing. He was provisionally charged with murder in the Moka court on Friday afternoon.
