109,000 Mauritians Classified as Poor
109,000 Mauritians are currently considered poor. This figure was revealed by the Minister of Social Security, Ashok Subron, during a symposium in Côte d’Or, held on the occasion of International Day for the Eradication of Poverty.
Currently, a family earning less than Rs 14,500 per month is classified as living in relative poverty. "However, the government plans to revise this threshold," the minister stated.
Ashok Subron also mentioned the new Legal Aid law as an indicator for this new threshold, which stipulates that a couple with Rs 25,000 left after household expenses can now qualify for state support.
