Chikungunya on the Rise
Title: Chikungunya on the Rise
The epidemiological situation regarding chikungunya, which is now spreading to new areas, is raising alarms among health authorities. According to Dr. Fazil Khodabocus, the interim director of health services, 22 new cases were reported on Tuesday, March 3rd, compared to 10 the day before. The total count since the beginning of the year has now reached 223 cases, of which 36 are active.
What also concerns the authorities is the geographical expansion of the disease. "We have noted that the disease is spreading to other regions that had not yet been affected until now," Dr. Khodabocus stated. In addition to the outbreak identified in the Camp-Levieux area, Plaisance, Roches-Brunes, and their surroundings, cases have also been recorded in Eau-Coulée, Forest Side, Henrietta, and Terre-Rouge.
To explain this increase, the interim director of health services points to the recent rainfall, which has favored the proliferation of infected mosquitoes. He urges the population to take more precautions to prevent larval breeding sites and protect themselves from bites. Wearing covering clothing and using repellent products are particularly recommended.
Finally, Dr. Khodabocus reminds everyone that it is important not to trivialize the disease, whose symptoms include joint pain and fever, among others.
