Arrest in the Reward Money Case: SP Jagai Held in Police Cell in Coromandel

Significant developments in the investigation surrounding the Reward Money case as Police Superintendent Ashik Jagai was arrested by the Financial Crimes Commission (FCC) on Wednesday evening following his interrogation. He will spend the night in a police cell at the Coromandel police station.
The FCC accuses him of recommending several irregular payments drawn from a fund meant for police informants. He is scheduled to appear in court on Thursday.
"Nothing," replied Ashik Jagai when asked by the Défi Media Group if he had anything to be ashamed of. This was during his arrival, accompanied by his lawyer Me Raouf Gulbul, at the Financial Crimes Commission (FCC) in Réduit on Wednesday afternoon, August 13.
A strong presence of the Special Support Unit was deployed within the FCC premises.
The high-ranking officer was interrogated "under warning." The former head of the now-defunct Special Striking Team (SST) was called to explain the amounts related to the Reward Money case, totaling several million rupees, claimed by the SST to compensate informants between August 2022 and the dissolution of the unit in November 2024.
Ashik Jagai's hearing is deemed crucial for the future of the investigation.
As a reminder, FCC investigators have already interviewed a former member of the defunct SST, Sergeant Yusuf Hossen. He has been arrested in connection with this case and faces two provisional charges of money laundering before the court.
To date, six police officers have been arrested in this case:
- Assistant Commissioners of Police (ACP) Lilram Deal and Dunraz Gangadin
- Assistant Superintendents of Police (ASP) Ashik Jagai and Faaraz Mooniaruth
- Sergeants Yeshdeo Seeboruth and Yusuf Ali Hossen, the latter being presented as a close collaborator of SP Ashik Jagai.
