If I Were the Minister of Christmas... - Agnès: "I Want Every Child to Have a Smile for Christmas"

At just 12 years old, Agnès has a vivid imagination and a strong sense of sharing. If she had the power to decide, she would make Christmas a time of generosity, joy, and light for all children in Mauritius.

If you were the Minister of Christmas, what would your first law be to make Mauritius happier?
My first law would be to ensure that every community center on the island has a Santa Claus and that every Mauritian child receives a gift, even those who do not celebrate Christmas. For me, Christmas is not just a holiday of gifts; it is a celebration of hope, joy, and great expectations. I want every child to be able to smile at Christmas because a shining face and a happy child is the most beautiful gift.

What would you change to ensure that all children in Mauritius have a better Christmas?
I would encourage families to engage in charitable and social activities, such as visiting nursing homes, orphanages, and hospitals. Christmas should be a time of sharing and brotherhood. By giving a bit of their time, children could bring light and a smile to those who are suffering, especially sick children. It would also show them the importance of bringing joy to others selflessly and from the heart.

What is one thing you would ban during the holidays?
I would ban screens in all homes during Christmas. Without screens, everyone could fully enjoy the festivities. Children would rediscover simple pleasures: talking as a family, playing together, sharing their day. This would allow everyone to experience the true magic of Christmas, rooted in reality and human connection, away from the virtual world.

If you could give a magical gift to the entire island, what would it be?
I would have a gigantic Christmas tree installed in every town and village, adorned with beautiful lights and decorations to create a magical atmosphere. It would be the tree of hope, joy, and friendship, a symbol of happiness for the whole island. A magical tree that would light up the hearts of Mauritians and remind us that we are all brothers and sisters under the same rainbow.

If you could invite a personality or character to Mauritius for Christmas, who would it be and why?
I would invite Santa Claus himself, as his presence symbolizes sharing, celebration, and generosity. His arrival would create an unforgettable memory for all children. He would highlight important values: kindness, sharing, humility, and selflessness. It would be a unique and magical way to celebrate Christmas, blending universal tradition with the warmth of Mauritian hospitality.
