Suspicion of Illicit Enrichment: The Gurbhoo Family's Lifestyle Under FCC Scrutiny

A luxurious villa with a pool valued at over Rs 15 million has been raided. The Anti-Drug & Smuggling Unit (Adsu) and the Financial Crimes Commission (FCC) conducted a search of Pascal Gurbhoo's lavish villa in Beau-Bassin. The truck driver, suspected of drug trafficking, has been detained.

A pool, designer jewelry, a Harley-Davidson, and a multi-level villa valued at over Rs 15 million — all registered under a truck driver's name. On Wednesday, the Adsu from the Western Division and the FCC executed a major operation at several properties belonging to the Gurbhoo family in Barkly, Beau-Bassin, and Pointe-aux-Sables. At the end of the raid, 43-year-old Louis Pascal Gurbhoo was detained and is set to appear in court in Port-Louis on Thursday.

The villa on Nelson Mandela Avenue stands out in the Beau-Bassin suburb. It features two floors, glass railings, an open terrace, false ceilings, a large pool, a landscaped garden, and inside, high-end furniture and a master bedroom with a dressing room. This standard of living sharply contrasts with the presumed salary of a truck driver.

The FCC has been monitoring the Gurbhoo family's asset trajectory for several years. As early as 2018, an inventory exercise estimated the then-unfinished property at Rs 14 million. Construction continued despite the ongoing investigation. Today, according to investigators led by Chief Inspector Subarredi and supervised by Superintendent Jankee and ASP Ramburuth, the villa's value is estimated to exceed Rs 15 million.

Jewelry, SUVs, and Harley-Davidson Confiscated

The search of the Barkly villa yielded a wealth of findings. Diesel and Michael Kors watches, Pandora earrings, gold rings and chains — some personalized, others set with sapphires — were discovered in the residence. Investigators also seized a Ford Wildtrak SUV, a Suzuki Celerio, a DAF truck, a Bobcat, and a motorcycle from the yard.

The operation did not stop there. At Iris Avenue, also in Barkly, another family property was searched: three Pulsar motorcycles, a quad bike, a Honda Fit, and a Harley-Davidson were confiscated. At Pointe-aux-Sables, at a third relative's home, a van and Rs 54,000 in cash were seized.

After the searches, Louis Pascal Gurbhoo was taken to the FCC headquarters where he faced questioning about the funding of his villa, the origins of his jewelry, and the nature of his lifestyle. The interrogation led to his detention.

The three other family members involved in the searches were released. No trace of drugs was found in the various properties searched — an absence that does not rule out, in the eyes of investigators, the possibility of enrichment linked to drug trafficking.

The case is now proceeding through the judicial system.
