Bérenger: "I will see if I will resign today as Deputy Prime Minister"
"I will see whether I will resign today as Deputy Prime Minister": this is what the leader of the MMM stated after the party's Political Bureau meeting on Monday afternoon.
"My decision is made, but when I will execute it, and if there is execution, I will communicate the details," he added.
Paul Bérenger announced that he will not be present at the National Assembly on Tuesday when parliamentary work resumes. However, he clarified that MMM MPs who wish to attend the session can do so. "Everyone must take responsibility," he emphasized.
Why is he considering leaving the government?
According to Paul Bérenger, he disagrees with what has been happening within the government since November. He stated this during his meeting with Prime Minister Navin Ramgoolam on Monday.
Given the "deteriorating" economic situation and international tensions, particularly with the war in the Middle East, "this is not the time for the country to be without a full-time Minister of Finance," Paul Bérenger declared.
He added: "If I must choose between my position as Deputy Prime Minister and the country, I will choose the country. If I must choose between my country and my party, I will choose my country."
Paul Bérenger also indicated that the MMM Central Committee will meet this Wednesday at 3:30 PM at Hennessy Park, Ébène. If necessary, the MMM will then convene its Delegates' Assembly.
