Remote Work: Mauritius Telecom Implements a Strategic Plan for National Resilience
In a global context characterized by tensions in the Middle East and growing concerns regarding energy supply, fuel costs, and global logistics, Mauritius Telecom (MT) is establishing a hybrid work model. As a critical infrastructure operator and a cornerstone of national connectivity, the company is taking steps to enhance the continuity of its operations, maintain service quality, and contribute to the country's resilience.
This initiative aligns with the national discourse on business continuity and responsible energy management. Through a structured, prepared, and responsible approach, Mauritius Telecom has chosen to anticipate and methodically act to balance operational continuity, energy efficiency, and contributions to collective efforts.
Therefore, in response to the national imperative for energy conservation, the company will implement a work-from-home model starting April 6, adopting a hybrid approach that includes three days of remote work per week for about 40% of its workforce, which amounts to nearly 750 employees. This arrangement can be gradually strengthened if the situation necessitates, following a structured and responsible approach.
This initiative is expected to achieve approximately 5,000 kWh in electricity savings per day, as well as a monthly reduction of about 25,000 liters of fuel associated with commuting. It will thus help reduce both energy consumption in offices and dependence on daily travel.
A Structured Organization Adapted to Operational Realities
To ensure effective and balanced implementation, employees have been categorized into four work categories based on the nature of their roles and operational needs:
- Critical on-site staff,
- Hybrid mode staff,
- Remote work-capable staff,
- Essential operational staff in the field.
This segmentation allows Mauritius Telecom to pragmatically adapt its structure, balancing service continuity, operational efficiency, and energy responsibility.
Commitment to Quality Service in Remote Work
The company reaffirms that there will be no compromise on the quality of services provided. Mauritius Telecom is establishing the necessary measures to ensure strict operational monitoring and optimal continuity of its activities.
All employees involved in remote work will be adequately equipped to perform their functions efficiently from a distance. For certain critical roles, enhanced provisions are in place, including dual connectivity, comprising both fiber and a my.t everywhere solution (5G mobile router), to ensure an additional level of resilience and continuity, particularly in the event of power outages or local disruptions.
Teams working remotely will thus be fully equipped and supported to guarantee continuity, responsiveness, and efficiency in remote operations, especially for critical support and customer relations functions.
"Mauritius Telecom is acting today to strengthen the continuity of essential services in the country. Our role is to ensure that, regardless of circumstances, our operations remain stable, our teams are ready, and our services are fully assured. This hybrid work model reflects a structured approach to resilience, preparation, and continuity. It is a controlled, prepared, and responsible exercise that we are capable of intensifying further if necessary," said Mauritius Telecom's CEO, Veemal Gungadin.
Mauritius Telecom Also Supports the Continuity of Its Clients' Activities
Beyond its internal organization, Mauritius Telecom also offers its expertise and capabilities to individuals, SMEs, and businesses wishing to enhance their operational continuity. Leveraging the solutions deployed for its own teams, the company is capable of providing its clients with concrete business continuity solutions, particularly in remote work, connectivity, and operational resilience.
Furthermore, Mauritius Telecom aims to contribute to the Mauritian economic fabric's ability to remain operational and connected, regardless of circumstances. The company also seeks to promote the sharing of best practices regarding business continuity and flexible work in line with ongoing national discussions.
By adopting the work-from-home model, Mauritius Telecom aims to set an example as a reference company and a committed player in the Mauritian economy, demonstrating that it is possible to combine civic responsibility, operational performance, and efficiency.
