Allegations of Child Ill-Treatment: Mufti Peerbocus Remains in Custody

Mufti Azhar Peerbocus appeared before the Flacq court early Monday morning. The police opposed his release, and he was returned to a police cell at the Moka Detention Centre until April 27.

The cleric faces three provisional charges of "child ill-treatment." His interrogation has not yet started. Shortly after his arrest on Saturday evening, as he disembarked from a flight from South Africa at Plaisance, Mufti Azhar Peerbocus was informed of complaints made against him by several students from the Twaha Academy, located in Bel-Air, regarding allegations of abuse. He has denied the allegations.

The investigation is being conducted by Inspector Moosun of the CID of Bel-Air/Rivière-Sèche, under the supervision of Superintendent Babajee.
