Allegations of Abuse at Twaha Academy: A Mother Speaks Out

"I knew he was getting beaten; his teacher hit him. When I asked him, he told me, 'Mama, I was beaten with a bamboo stick.' It was only when he was praying that they hit him on the head." This is the testimony of a mother whose 11-year-old son claims to have been a victim of abuse by Mufti Azhar Peerboccus. She states that she withdrew her child from Twaha Academy, located in Bel-Air, where the religious figure worked, and enrolled him in another school to continue his education. The child spent only two months there.

The former director of Twaha Academy is facing complaints regarding alleged assaults filed by students from Twaha Academy Boarding School, located in Pont-Lardier, Bel-Air–Rivière-Sèche. After spending a night in custody, he appeared before the Weekend Court on Sunday. Three provisional charges of "Child Ill-Treatment" have been brought against him.

The police opposed his release, and he remains in custody. The religious figure denies the allegations against him. He was arrested upon his arrival at Plaisance Airport on Saturday night, coming from South Africa.
