Heavy Rain Alert: The National Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Centre Urges Caution
A heavy rain alert has been issued by the Vacoas Meteorological Station on Tuesday, April 28, 2026, at 4:45 AM, and will remain in effect until 7:00 PM.
The National Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Centre (NDRRMC) is closely monitoring the situation, according to a statement released this morning.
Pravind Rughoo, the communication officer for the NDRRMC and the National Emergency Operations Command, urges the public to remain vigilant and to follow official recommendations.
In case of sustained downpours, particularly in the Port-Louis area, it is strongly advised to seek shelter in elevated areas and avoid unnecessary travel, especially in basements and underground parking lots. The public is also encouraged to regularly monitor weather bulletins.
Authorities recommend avoiding high-risk areas, such as flooded roads, rivers, waterfalls, and mountain slopes. During thunderstorms, it is best to stay away from trees and tall structures, and to unplug electrical appliances.
To minimize damage, it is suggested to protect homes using sandbags or flood prevention devices. In the event of rapidly rising waters, it is imperative to prepare for evacuation to higher ground, with an emergency kit readily available.
Special attention is required in areas prone to landslides. Authorities are calling for vigilance regarding signs of water accumulation or rock falls, and recommend keeping children away from these areas.
The public is encouraged to stay informed through the media and mobile applications such as Traffic Watch and My.T Weather.
Additionally, the police, Special Mobile Force, firefighters, and relevant services are mobilized to ensure the safety of the population.
