Customs: New Rules Regarding Passenger Baggage

Passengers carrying commercial goods in their checked baggage must strictly adhere to the customs procedures in effect upon arrival at Sir Seewoosagur Ramgoolam International Airport (SSR). This was highlighted by the Mauritius Revenue Authority (MRA) in a statement released on February 4th.

According to customs authorities, all commercial goods, whether transported in checked luggage or carry-on, must be declared at the "Red Channel" upon arrival. These items will be held by customs and then transferred to the PATS freight warehouse for clearance according to existing procedures.

The MRA also emphasizes the importance of clearly separating personal effects from commercial goods. Passengers are encouraged to pack items intended for commercial use in secure suitcases or packages distinctly separate from their personal luggage, ensuring their names and addresses are clearly marked to facilitate customs clearance.

Furthermore, an important change will come into effect on February 10, 2026. From this date, the freight amount included in the calculation of the value of commercial goods imported in accompanied luggage for tax purposes will be set at 3 US dollars per kilogram or fraction thereof.

Customs authorities remind that failure to comply with these obligations may result in delays, seizures, and penalties, urging travelers to be vigilant when transporting commercial goods.
