Record Cocaine Seizure Off the Coast of Mauritius: What We Know
A record drug seizure has occurred off the coast of Mauritius, marking the largest ever recorded in the area. More than 400 kilograms of cocaine were discovered on board the Greek ship Alpha Bravery, which was intercepted this weekend while traveling between Brazil and Singapore.
According to initial reports from DASP Suhail Lidialam, the discovery was reported on Friday, November 7, 2025, by the ship's captain after an internal search. The captain alerted a local shipping agency, which promptly forwarded the information to Mauritian authorities.
The Greek-flagged vessel was carrying 23 crew members. Upon receiving the report, authorities permitted the ship to enter Mauritian waters to secure the suspicious cargo.
Escorted by the National Coast Guard (NCG), the Alpha Bravery was taken over by MARCOS (Marine Commandos) as soon as it entered Mauritian waters. They gained access to the engine room, a compartment that the captain had sealed prior to their arrival.
The drugs, carefully hidden in life jackets, were extracted by ADSU teams with support from the Maritime Air Squadron, DCIU, and officers from the Scene of Crime Office. They were then transported to Port Louis under heavy security.
Initial estimates indicate more than 400 kilograms of cocaine, with a market value exceeding Rs 4.5 billion. The drugs have been taken to the Central Barracks for an official weighing exercise.
The ship's captain has been arrested and taken to the Central Barracks for questioning. As for the 23 crew members, they remain on board the Greek-flagged ship, currently under close police surveillance in Mauritian waters.
It remains to be determined what the final destination of this cargo is: Mauritius or another country in the region? The investigation, led by the Mauritian police, will need to clarify this crucial point.
