Curepipe Court - Pavaday Case: Modification of Charges Against Former Teacher

The provisional charges against Frédéric Pavaday have been adjusted in the Curepipe court, where the former teacher made another appearance. He is now facing four charges following the receipt of new emails sent to investigators.

Frédéric Pavaday appeared again in the Curepipe court and was returned to police custody. At the request of the Director of Public Prosecutions (DPP), the initial provisional charge against him was dismissed and replaced. The former music teacher now faces four provisional counts of charges.

This modification comes after the receipt of two emails sent to the Family Protection Brigade. The charges include: Attempt upon Chastity, Child Ill-Treatment, Causing a child to be sexually abused, and Sexual intercourse with a minor under the age of 16.

The first two counts relate to the 12-year-old complainant at the center of the case. The other two arise from information contained in the emails received by investigators on Monday evening.

During discussions about bail, DPP representative Priscilla Veerabadren questioned Chief Inspector Vinesh Ramburn of the CID in Curepipe regarding these new elements.

According to the officer, the first email reports allegations dating back to 2008. A former student of Loreto, who was in Standard 5 at the time, claims she was a victim of inappropriate touching by the former music teacher. The second message mentions events that allegedly occurred between 2015 and 2020. The author claims to have had sexual relations multiple times with the suspect while she was still a minor.

Chief Inspector Ramburn explained in court that this new information led to the modification of the provisional charges against the accused.

The defense, represented by Me Sanjeev Teeluckdharry and Me Sacheen Boodhoo, questioned the credibility of the emails. Me Teeluckdharry pointed out that they lack an official header or signature, arguing that it is easy to send an anonymous message.

The police also indicated that they have collected a deposition from the NGO Pedostop, which is in contact with the two alleged victims. They are expected to travel to Mauritius as part of the investigation.

The proceedings, which were suspended shortly after 4 PM yesterday, will resume this Wednesday at 2 PM.
