Dev Jokhoo Explains His Resignation as Prison Commissioner

Dev Jokhoo provided an explanation for his resignation as Prison Commissioner. "I came to help, but I did not receive support from the staff," he stated to Radio Plus on Monday, following his hearing before the Board of Inquiry investigating the suspicious death of inmate Andy Selmour.

"I preferred to leave; no one forced me to go," Dev Jokhoo clarified.

After 11 months leading the Mauritius Prison Service (MPS), he submitted his resignation to Prime Minister Navin Ramgoolam.

Officially, personal reasons are cited. However, underlying tensions with the Government House seem to have influenced his decision.

In a letter dated March 17, 2026, the Prison Commissioner explained that urgent "personal issues" prevent him from continuing his duties. Appointed on April 23, 2025, he expressed that he fully appreciated his time at the helm of the institution while expressing gratitude for the trust placed in him.
