Suttyhudeo Tengur, President of APEC: 'A bread price set at Rs 3 would have been more humane'

Suttyhudeo Tengur, the president of the Association for the Protection of the Environment and Consumers (APEC), believes that a more moderate increase in the price of bread, set at Rs 3, would have been "more humane". He argues that a rise of 90 cents would have a less severe impact on family budgets. "For instance, if a family typically buys an average of ten loaves of bread daily, that’s a savings of Rs 9 per day, which amounts to about Rs 270 a month," he explains. In his view, the new price should not exceed Rs 3.

Regarding the monthly allowance of Rs 121 provided to individuals on the social register of Mauritius, Suttyhudeo Tengur sees it as a positive measure. He believes this support sends an encouraging signal to assist the most vulnerable households.
