Khushal Lobine Advocates for a 'Special Sovereign Fund'

As the crisis in the Middle East raises international concerns, its repercussions are prompting discussions in Mauritius. Some individual initiatives are reigniting the debate on forms of solidarity.

MP Ehsan Juman has asked the finance department of the National Assembly to deduct 20% of his salary for a period of six months. This decision is framed as a gesture of solidarity.

In response to this announcement, Khushal Lobine, leader of the New Democrats, argues that such initiatives should be viewed within a broader context. While he commends the MP's decision, he emphasizes the need for a structured approach. "I applaud Eshan Juman's decision in these times when the most vulnerable are affected," he adds. He points out that he has proposed the creation of a Special Sovereign Fund multiple times, aimed at intervening during crises. "A Special Sovereign Fund encourages high-income earners to contribute 15% of their salary on humanitarian grounds," he explains. He advocates for the adoption of a legal framework to regulate this type of contribution.

According to him, establishing a law and clear regulations would ensure transparency, equity, and proper management of the collected funds. The challenge lies in finding a balance that meets the needs of the most vulnerable during times of crisis.
