Middle East Crisis: Ishmal Sumbhoo, municipal councillor, requests a 60% reduction in his monthly allowances
Ishmal Sumbhoo, a municipal councillor from Quatre-Bornes, follows in the footsteps of Eshan Juman. At 29 years old and a member of the Labour Party, he has requested the Chief Executive of the municipality to deduct 60% from his allowances for a period of six months, from April to September 2026. This gesture reflects his "personal commitment to contribute, albeit modestly, to humanitarian aid efforts in response to the ongoing crisis in the Middle East."
Considering his base salary as a councillor and his allowances, the total amounts to approximately Rs 21,000. Thus, the deduction will be close to Rs 12,600.
In an interview with Défi Media Group, Ishmal Sumbhoo spoke of a "noble cause" and emphasized that every rupee counts. He also called on young people to do the same.
"We need to help wherever we can to alleviate the population's suffering," he stated.
As a reminder, Eshan Juman, the MP for constituency No. 3 (Port-Louis-Est/Port-Louis-Maritime), announced on his Facebook page on Sunday that he had asked the National Assembly's finance department to deduct 20% from his base salary for six months starting in April 2026, in order to "contribute, however modestly, to the solidarity efforts related to the crisis in the Middle East."
