Crisis in the Middle East: Municipal Councillor Shakti Dewoo Proposes 100% Salary Reduction for Six Months

Shakti Dewoo, a municipal councillor from the Labour Party in Curepipe (Ward 2), has announced his intention to donate his salary to support efforts related to the crisis in the Middle East. He plans to send a letter to the Chief Executive of the Curepipe municipality tomorrow, proposing to forfeit his entire salary for six months starting in April. This amounts to approximately Rs 20,000, including base salary and allowances. Speaking to the Défi Media Group on Monday, Shakti Dewoo stated that this initiative was inspired by Eshan Juman, and he believes such a gesture can help alleviate the suffering of the population.

Why give up his entire salary?

"I can afford it for the next six months... I am still living with my parents, so I can manage," he confided. At 39 years old, Shakti Dewoo is set to be sworn in as a lawyer next September. "There is a beginning to everything," he affirmed, calling on his fellow councillors and possibly ministers to make similar gestures.

It is worth noting that Eshan Juman, the MP for constituency No. 3 (Port-Louis East/Port-Louis Maritime), announced on his Facebook page that he has requested the National Assembly's finance department to deduct 20% of his base salary for six months starting in April 2026. Earlier on Monday, Ishmal Sumbhoo, a municipal councillor from Quatre-Bornes, requested a 60% reduction in his monthly allowances, amounting to nearly Rs 12,600, for the same period.
