Parliament: Shirin Aumeeruddy-Cziffra Clarifies the Controversy Surrounding the Seating Arrangement

The Speaker of the National Assembly, Shirin Aumeeruddy-Cziffra, provided clarifications regarding the controversy over the seating arrangement during a live appearance on Radio Plus in the Grand Journal at 4:30 PM. She stated that she had not had any formal discussions on the matter but did have a conversation with Paul Bérenger that morning. "Mr. Bérenger informed me that he might not be present tomorrow," she noted.

In response to a letter from opposition whip Adrien Duval, the Speaker expressed regret that Duval made the issue public without mentioning that she had already replied to him.

Duval questioned the presence of three members of the MMM—Paul Bérenger, Joanna Bérenger, and Chetan Baboolall—on the opposition benches. He argued that these parliamentarians cannot sit behind the opposition leader while maintaining their status within their party.

In a letter to the Speaker on Monday, Adrien Duval claimed that such a configuration would not only be irregular but also incompatible with constitutional principles.

Furthermore, Shirin Aumeeruddy-Cziffra mentioned that Paul Bérenger was supposed to send her a letter on Monday. "Instead, he spoke to me directly," she emphasized.

"I do not hide that depending on what Paul Bérenger says to me, a decision will be made afterward," the Speaker stated. However, she stressed one point: "Nothing will change regarding the seating arrangement, even if Paul Bérenger is not present in Parliament tomorrow."
