Seating Arrangement in Parliament: The Speaker Clarifies
The opening of the session at the National Assembly on Tuesday, April 7, was marked by clarifications from the Speaker, Shirin Aumeeruddy-Cziffra, regarding the seating arrangement. She mentioned receiving two letters, one from Adrien Duval, the Opposition Whip, and the other from Paul Bérenger, concerning the allocation of seats within the chamber. The Speaker expressed regret that these exchanges were made public prior to any decision from the presidency.
The Speaker of the National Assembly emphasized her exclusive authority: "the allocation of seats [...] shall be made by the Speaker." She also clarified the fundamental rule that each deputy is entitled to a designated seat. In response to media inquiries, the Speaker explained that she had answered some questions to avoid confusion, limiting herself to aspects related to seating allocation.
Shirin Aumeeruddy-Cziffra did not hesitate to address parliamentary ethics. "Premature disclosure of such correspondence risks undermining that process and may affect the perceived integrity of parliamentary proceedings," she stated. She specified that she awaits clarifications regarding Paul Bérenger, Chetan Baboolall, and Joanna Bérenger before making a decision on the seat allocations. She stressed the importance of respecting procedures and maintaining the confidentiality of communications addressed to the presidency.
