Interview with Défi Media Group in 2012 - Kailash Purryag, former president: 'The challenge is immense, but I am ready'

Kailash Purryag left behind a legacy of integrity, simplicity, and patriotic dedication. In 2012, just before he took office as President of the Republic, he opened the doors to his personal life for Défi Media Group for the show "People." This article revisits this unique interview, highlighting the remarkable journey of a statesman with a human face.

On July 21, 2012, in Camp-Fouquereaux, Kailash Purryag welcomed journalists as if they were friends, with a big smile, a firm handshake, and, most importantly, a cup of tea. Alongside him was his wife Aneetah, a discreet but steadfast supporter, ensuring the interview went smoothly.

The man gearing up to become President radiated simplicity. "This is one of the most wonderful days of my life," he confided. "I have served my country in various capacities. Today, it is an honor to serve at this level." He spoke from the heart, candidly aware of the weight of his new role: "The challenge is immense, but I am ready."

From Modest Roots to Deserved Ascension

Born on December 12, 1947, in Camp-Fouquereaux, into a humble family of seven children, Kailash Purryag never forgot his origins. His father, Ragoonanan, was a milkman, and his mother, Deehantah, was a housewife. Life was not easy, but family values were strong: hard work, respect, and honesty.

"My mother always told me: 'In life, you must push forward and never back down from an obstacle,'" he recalled with emotion. As for his father, he instilled in him the importance of doing things with heart. These moral foundations shaped the man he became.

A bright student, he completed his primary schooling at Shree Shamboonath Government School and then attended Mauritius College, where he obtained his law degree in 1973. That same year, he joined the Labor Party, marking the beginning of a political commitment that would last over 40 years. Loyal to the Labor Party, he exemplified the disciplined and loyal soldier.

Behind the politician stood a woman: Aneetah. A devoted wife and discreet partner, she shared both the shadows and the light of his life. They married on December 8, 1973, and together they raised a family, including their daughter Anuradha, now a lawyer, and two grandchildren whom Kailash adored.

"He's a generous, simple, and very caring man," Aneetah testified in the interview. "Every day spent with him is a learning experience." For Kailash Purryag, family was a cornerstone. Despite his responsibilities, he always found time to share a meal, a song, a prayer, or a moment of reading with his loved ones.

The Man Behind the Presidential Office

Few presidents have revealed their humanity as much as he did. He was a passionate music lover, especially fond of classic Hindi songs. He had a soft spot for Lata Mangeshkar’s songs, admired Raj Kapoor, and listened religiously to Mohammed Rafi's tracks. His favorite actress? Rekha.

He was an avid reader. The book that impacted him most was "Reinventing Government" by David Osborne and Ted Gaebler. He firmly believed in reforms and the modernization of the state while respecting humanity.

His favorite animal? The dog. His flower: the rose. His favorite fruit: lychee. He loved "margoze" for its therapeutic properties. His lucky number: 111. These earnest details made him a president close to the people.

Spirituality at the Heart of Public Life

Kailash Purryag was a deeply religious man. Prayer was an integral part of his daily life, a source of peace and energy. "Even with a very busy agenda, I always take time to pray. It helps me stay grounded," he said.

His most beautiful journey was a pilgrimage to India in 1991, which transformed him. More than just a statesman, Kailash Purryag was a man of values, spirituality, and moral rigor.

At the end of his presidential term, he dedicated his time to reading, his grandchildren, and his wife. He meditated, prayed, and read, while remaining attentive to the developments in his country.

The Final Farewell

On June 21, 2025, Kailash Purryag passed away at the age of 77. The news sent shockwaves through the Mauritian political landscape. Tributes poured in, unanimous and heartfelt, celebrating the rectitude, simplicity, and integrity of this exceptional man.

Many citizens gathered in Camp-Fouquereaux to pay their last respects. Neighbors, children, and strangers all had anecdotes to share: a gesture, a smile, a word. For Kailash Purryag was not just a statesman; he was, above all, a man of the people.

His journey is a hymn to merit. It demonstrates that with values, perseverance, and heart, one can reach great heights without renouncing one’s roots. He traversed decades without ever compromising or betraying his ideals. He was a modest man who became president but remained profoundly human. His legacy is that of a faithful husband, a loving father, and, above all, an unflagging patriot.
