Solemn Tribute to Former President of the Republic, Kailash Purryag

On Sunday, June 22, Prime Minister Navin Ramgoolam, accompanied by his wife, Veena Ramgoolam, visited the home of Mr. Kailash Purryag to pay his last respects. The former President of the Republic passed away the day before, on Saturday, at the age of 77.
Also present were Deputy Prime Minister Paul Bérenger, the Governor of the Bank of Mauritius, Rama Sithanen, former President Cassam Uteem, and leader of the Mauritian Gathering, Nando Bodha, among other dignitaries who came to honor the memory of the former Head of State.
Kailash Purryag's funeral took place this afternoon. The funeral procession, accompanied by the Police Band and members of the Special Mobile Force, left the residence of his wife, Aneetah Purryag, located on Shamboonath Street, Castel, Camp Fouquereaux, and proceeded to the crematorium at Allée Brillant in Castel.
Before taking on the highest office of the State on July 21, 2012, succeeding Sir Anerood Jugnauth, Kailash Purryag enjoyed a rich political career. He was first elected in 1976 and served successively as a member of parliament, minister, and then Speaker of the National Assembly.
