MMM: A Decisive Week, Nominees Still in Limbo

Media appearance for Paul Bérenger is set for Wednesday, March 25, following his resignation as Deputy Prime Minister. The announcement of his successor is still pending.

Attention now shifts to the next steps within the Mauritian Militant Movement (MMM), especially with the political bureau meeting scheduled for this Monday. Last Friday, the historical leader hinted during our broadcast that he did not plan to attend the meeting. However, his entourage suggests that further developments might arise.

Bérenger met with members of the purple political bureau yesterday at Riverwalk. Pressure is also mounting from municipal councils, with two out of five mayors affiliated with the MMM.

A decisive week is looming on the political chessboard. Eyes are also on Joanna Bérenger, whose next move is highly anticipated. The Junior Minister for the Environment has yet to make any statements regarding her future within the MMM and the government.

Additionally, pressure is increasing at the local government level. Two of the five municipalities are led by MMM mayors. In Port-Louis, Lord Mayor Aslam Hosenally is expected to meet with the 14 municipal councillors from the MMM this week to assess the situation and gather feedback.

In Beau-Bassin/Rose-Hill, the situation appears more tense. Mayor Gabriella Batour is reportedly contemplating her future with the MMM, and a meeting with Paul Bérenger may be requested soon.

Conversely, Robert Hungley intends to remain in his vice-presidential position.

Crucial decisions are anticipated this week, starting with the MMM political bureau meeting on Monday, followed by the central committee on Wednesday. Additional developments may occur following yesterday's meeting between Paul Bérenger and members of the political bureau, which some have framed as a supportive visit while others view it as a critical meeting to determine the way forward, particularly regarding leadership within the MMM.
