Paul Bérenger Resigns as Deputy Prime Minister - Avinaash Munohur: "The Current Situation Resembles 1993"

The resignation of Paul Bérenger from his position as Deputy Prime Minister is a "logical consequence of events," according to political scientist and political strategy consultant Avinaash Munohur. He believes that "Paul Bérenger's position had become untenable within the government due to his stances."

He adds that "it was also clear that a break had occurred some time ago with Navin Ramgoolam, even if they claimed to still be on very good terms." For him, this resignation marks the culmination of a political process rather than a sudden event.

The political scientist emphasizes the institutional significance of this decision: "Paul Bérenger submitted his resignation as Deputy Prime Minister, not as a member of the governing majority." In this context, attention turns to the upcoming meeting of the MMM’s political bureau (BP) scheduled for Monday. "The MMM will hold a very important BP on Monday where the departures of Paul and the MMM from the government will likely be discussed," he points out. According to him, the outcome of this meeting will clarify his position.

At the same time, Avinaash Munohur reminds that "Paul Bérenger has been stirring the pot for several months," particularly "by suggesting that hidden forces and gangs were operating within the very heart of the government." This situation, he argues, now requires clarifications. "He must now speak up," he asserts.

He outlines two possible scenarios: "Either he will remain as a back-bencher, in solidarity with the elected officials who wish to stay to continue the work for the Militants, or he will disassociate himself from them and join the opposition." In either case, "he will have the freedom to ask embarrassing, even very embarrassing, questions to the government and the PM."

The political scientist adds: "In either scenario, Paul Bérenger will focus on what he does best from now on: gradually wear down the government and concentrate on reorganizing the MMM." He anticipates rapid developments within the party: "It is clear that things will evolve quite quickly within the MMM," with Paul Bérenger aiming to "regain control of the political bureau and the central committee (CC) in order to prepare what he will call the renewal."

Avinaash Munohur draws a historical parallel: "The current situation resembles that of 1993," recalling that at that time, Paul Bérenger "was expelled from the BP before the central committee reversed this decision and reinstated him. If he finds himself in the minority on the Political Bureau and the CC, he will quickly convene the Delegates’ Assembly, where he likely still holds a large majority," while cautiously echoing Bérenger's own words: "As he himself says, we shall see!"
