Paul Bérenger Resigns as Deputy Prime Minister: More Announcements Coming Soon, He Says

Paul Bérenger has resigned from his position as Deputy Prime Minister. The announcement was made during a press conference on Friday morning, March 20, at his office.

The events unfolded yesterday morning, according to the leader of the Mauves. A "mutual friend" of Navin Ramgoolam and Paul Bérenger informed him that the Prime Minister was "embarrassed" by the current situation.

Bérenger states that he immediately called the Prime Minister to ask if he wanted his resignation. A phone call was then arranged for the evening. At 9 PM last night, Navin Ramgoolam contacted Paul Bérenger. During this conversation, the Mauves leader announced his decision to resign to the head of government.

Bérenger mentions that he has his reasons for stepping down as Deputy Prime Minister, reasons he claims to have "already explained". He specifies that he will return with more details "in the coming days".

During the press conference, the Mauves leader highlighted that during the MMM Central Committee meeting on Wednesday, the party members expressed that they shared his criticisms but arrived at a "different conclusion".

"They think it is better for them to stay in government," he stated.

Among the arguments presented by the members is the desire to help those "who have been mistreated in opposition for years". "I understand their feelings," adds the Mauves leader.

When asked about his future within the MMM and in Parliament, he replied: "I will decide and will announce in the coming days... in the next few days."

Regarding potential further resignations, he claims: "Others will follow... Everyone has their full freedom..."

To recall, during a press conference held on Monday, after the MMM Political Bureau, Paul Bérenger had announced that he would not be present at the National Assembly the following day, at the resumption of parliamentary work. He had also hinted that he might submit his resignation as Deputy Prime Minister.
