Politics: Paul Bérenger Announces He Will Resign from the MMM Soon
Paul Bérenger is set to resign from the MMM in the coming days. The Mauve leader will not attend the political bureau scheduled for this Monday, as he confirmed to Radio Plus on Friday evening.
He reacted to comments from other MMM parliamentarians who have decided to remain in government, with sixteen of the eighteen elected officials making this choice. The two who have opted out are Paul Bérenger and Joanna Bérenger.
When asked about Rajesh Bhagwan's statement, which lamented that Paul Bérenger did not heed the voice of the party's supporters and questioned whether this decision was akin to creating a "special purpose vehicle" for someone else within the party, the MMM leader replied, "That’s nonsense."
It is worth noting that Paul Bérenger resigned from his position as Deputy Prime Minister earlier that morning. He has not provided official reasons for his departure. Since November, he has consistently expressed disagreement with how the government is handling certain issues.
Reacting to this resignation, the Prime Minister stated, "It’s sad that we’ve come to this point." He claimed to have been very patient and made numerous concessions, though he did not provide specifics, in an effort to keep Paul Bérenger in government. He assured that the Alliance of Change remains "intact."
A significant majority of supporters, as Paul Bérenger highlighted during a press conference on Wednesday, are in favor of keeping the MMM in the government. However, the leader himself has expressed a desire to exit the executive.
Mauve elected officials, during a press conference this evening, lamented that Paul Bérenger ignored the wishes expressed by the majority of supporters.
Paul Bérenger was responding to questions from Ruquyya Kurreembokus-Raffique.
