Gunness: "You Don't Change the Rules Mid-Game"
Ajay Gunness has dismissed any premature exit from the government. The deputy leader of MMM emphasizes the supremacy of the central committee and demands concrete evidence following allegations made by Paul Bérenger.
On Wednesday, March 25, 2026, Ajay Gunness reviewed the timeline of recent events, the decisions made during the MMM general committee, and the press conference held by MMM leader Paul Bérenger. He stated emphatically: "Today, we do not change the rules mid-game." He expressed his desire for "MMM unity to remain MMM unity," while affirming that Paul Bérenger continues to be their "leader." These remarks were made following a regional MMM committee meeting in constituency No. 17 (Curepipe/Midlands) that took place around 6:20 PM at the Curepipe municipal hall.
With a calm and smiling demeanor, Ajay Gunness sought to clarify: "For our region, we meet every Wednesday. I provided all the information that was available. I went through the chronology of events from March 9 to today: first political bureau, second political bureau, central committee. I provided all the details," he explained. Continuing his account, he asserted that "we had good democratic discussions," while noting that "this remains internal."
When asked to respond to the earlier press conference held by MMM leader Paul Bérenger, Ajay Gunness replied: "I have been working, working. I started looking into mandates. I went to Collège Royal to address one issue, I went to James Toolsy for another problem. I went to the office to check one or two files. Now I have come to the regional meeting." For him, there was nothing new in the comments made by the MMM leader.
Regarding the reasons presented by Paul Bérenger for resigning from his position as Deputy Prime Minister, including economic issues, corruption, the Mamy Ravatomanga case, and the Ministry of Infrastructure, Ajay Gunness questioned: Did Paul Bérenger provide concrete evidence concerning these "corruption cases"? Or, he added, "if he knows, as a patriot, he should report these cases to the relevant authorities, while adding: "If he has insider information, he alone will have it. I won’t have it."
Democratic Discussion
What about the position of the constituents regarding his retention in the government? To this question, Ajay Gunness did not hold back: "We had a democratic discussion," while adding that "not everyone will adopt the same position."
Concerning the rescheduling of the MMM central committee meeting to Friday, March 27, 2026, instead of Saturday, March 28, 2026, Ajay Gunness insisted that "we have no clash," as Paul Bérenger plans to hold "his activity" that Saturday. Will he be present on Saturday? "We will discuss this on Friday during our central committee," he responded.
Central Committee: The Supreme Body
Regarding the constitution of MMM, Ajay Gunness clarified that whether "old or new," their leader has always stated that "the central committee remains the supreme body, the decision-making body between two assemblies of delegates."
He also revisited the central committee meeting where Paul Bérenger announced that a "large majority" wants MMM to remain in government. He emphasized, "I have never heard him (Note: Paul Bérenger) ever challenge this." He also recounted the timeline of events surrounding the recent meetings held at the MMM central committee in recent days.
Furthermore, Ajay Gunness believes that "the assembly of delegates" can overturn the central committee and that a list exists. He specified that this same list voted for the Alliance of Change, which includes MMM, the Labour Party, New Democrats, and Rezistans ek Alternativ in 2024.
"Today we do not change the rules mid-game (...) And when it is in his purpose, I say there is a constitution, and when it is not in his purpose, I say there is none," he stated.
"And it is this same list that will be used if there is an assembly of delegates," he clarified. For him, the decision made during the general committee remains "valid" until a delegate assembly comes to overturn it, he indicated.
