Bérenger Calls His Troops Together This Saturday

Paul Bérenger, the leader of the MMM, is organizing a large rally this Saturday in Rose-Hill to clarify his political stance and explain his resignation from the government. Amidst internal tensions within the party, he is receiving support from unions while the central committee convenes to decide on remaining in government.

Bérenger is preparing for a significant gathering at the Rose-Hill community center this Saturday. In a statement to Défi Quotidien on Tuesday evening, he mentioned, "We will invite all supporters, Mauritians, who stand with us to a rally on Saturday. I look forward to seeing them at the community center in Rose-Hill." He is expected to clarify his position on the political landscape and within his party.

This rally comes at a time of unprecedented internal tensions within the MMM, with the vast majority of the political bureau (BP) members, as well as the central committee, refusing to exit the government. Paul Bérenger submitted his resignation as Deputy Prime Minister last Friday.

The leader of the mauves is also set to hold a press conference at his home this Wednesday at 11 am, where he will elaborate on the Saturday rally, detail the reasons for his departure from the government, and answer journalists' questions. These reasons include the management of various issues, such as the economy, the actions of certain individuals close to Navin Ramgoolam, and appointments.

Facing a Crucial Choice

While awaiting the rally, he has gained support from several associations and unions, including the Port-Louis Harbour and Dock Workers Union. Its president, Rama Valaydon, stated in a message, "I stand firmly by your side and offer my solidarity and support. (…) The port workers, both current and former, along with their families and the working class in general, will not forget your contributions to improving their living conditions through your struggle."

Conversely, during the political bureau meeting held last Monday, 15 out of the 18 parliamentarians from the party were present, excluding Paul Bérenger, Joanna Bérenger, and Chetan Baboolall. During this meeting, the decision was made to recall the central committee.

After the BP meeting on Monday, Reza Uteem, the president of the MMM, announced a "central committee meeting on Saturday, March 28, at the town hall council room of Beau-Bassin/Rose-Hill." This meeting will allow representatives from various regional committees of the party to express their views on the current situation and vote on the central question: should the MMM remain in government or withdraw? The outcome of this question seems to be already known. However, the 15 parliamentarians seek a clear decision on this matter to validate their position. A potential ousting of the leader is not currently on the agenda.
